GRI Commitment to Public Sector Decarbonisation and Energy Efficiency

Rásaíocht Con Éireann / Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) is proud to play its part in delivering the Government’s Climate Action Plan objectives for the public sector, a 51% reduction in energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a 50% improvement in energy efficiency by 2030.

These targets are tracked annually by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) under S.I. 426 of 2014, with all public bodies reporting through SEAI’s Monitoring and Reporting (M&R) system. GRI operates under the remit of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and reports annually on our progress.

SEAI’s latest figures (PSO-00232) show that GRI continues to make strong progress

  • - Energy Efficiency: Improved by 36.7% since the baseline year. (2009)
  • - Total CO₂ Emissions: Reduced by 50.1% compared to baseline (Average 2016 - 2018) — from 1,617,867 kgCO₂ to 807,375 kgCO₂.
  • - Fossil CO₂ Emissions: Reduced by 38.4% compared to baseline (Average 2016 - 2018) — from 409,535 kgCO₂ to 252,382 kgCO₂.
  • - Electricity-related Emissions: Down to 554,993 kgCO₂ in 2024.
  • - Thermal Energy-related Emissions: Down to 219,049 kgCO₂ in 2024.
  • - Transport Fuel-related Emissions: Just 33,333 kgCO₂ in 2024.

With our planned energy-saving projects including renewable energy installations, i.e. Solar PV Panels at Limerick, Shelbourne, Cork and Tralee, Heat Pump at Shelbourne Park and energy-efficient equipment upgrades including LED Track Lighting at Shelbourne and Cork, and operational improvements - we are projected to:

  • - Improve energy performance by 12.7 percentage points by 2030.
  • - Reduce total CO₂ emissions by 44.7%, exceeding the 2030 target.

Our Progress in the National Context

According to the SEAI Energy in Ireland 2024 report:

  • - Ireland’s energy-related emissions in 2023 were the lowest in over 30 years, down 8.3% from 2022.
  • - Renewable energy supplied 14.1% of total primary energy, with major growth in solar PV (+335%) and heat pumps (+19%).
  • - Wind generation reached a record 11.7 TWh, meeting one-third of electricity demand.
