Everything good in life starts with a dream…

22nd August 2023

Once upon a time there was a little girl who had a very big dream. She dreamt of winning the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park and believed with every molecule of her being that it would come true. The little girl had grown up with greyhounds. Since she was knee high to a grasshopper, she remembers walking the meadows with her mam and dad and telling them that one day she would train the winner of the derby. That little girl is a grown woman now, but she still believes she can make that dream come true and parade her canine best friend in front a packed stand at Shelbourne Park, her favourite place in the world. She dreams of elation, happiness, pure joy and a real sense of achievement.

There will be tears, laughter, celebrations and a huge after party with all her greyhound pals. She dreams of her greyhound breaking fast like Susie Sapphire and leading from start to finish as the underdog of the race. She dreams of her greyhound being a massive price in the final with her whole family there having their monthly wages on at 20/1 with Ted Hegarty! She dreams of her dad wrapping her arms around her when they finally achieve what they have always dreamt of. What they have always talked about. The bad days become a distant memory and the mantlepiece would become a shrine for the years to come of how much their greyhound gave to them. Always have hopes and dreams. You just never know when something magical will happen and when you are heading to the traps on Saturday week just remember that what’s for you won’t pass you.

Semi-finals

24 have become 12 and what a 12 we are left with. De Lahdedah was sensational yet again. Fair play to Liam Dowling. This dog in coming into the best form of his life at the right time with trap one in the semi-final a perfect draw. He clocked 29.31 but the week previous he was the fastest winner of the competition so far with a stunning 29.15. That didn’t last long however as The Other Kobe blasted from traps to win his heat in 29.15 along with the fastest sectionals of the 2023 derby so far clocking 3.38 & 16.88. Wow. Pretty awesome stuff from the Jennifer O’Donnell trained brother of last year’s winner Born Warrior. Bens Teddy was also excellent for trainer Pat Buckley when winning heat three in 29.39, a mighty effort beating Bockos Crystal and Threesixfive. The last heat winner was Clonroosk Sydney who was brilliant for trainer Matthew Harte to win in 29.55 coming from behind. John Jones and Well Met qualified in second while Patrick Guilfoyle’s Music Glideaway grabbed third.

As sponsors we have seen plenty of changes in the outright market, but this week was the biggest change as Coolavanny Hoffa lost his place at the top of the betting for the first time. He is now the second favourite at 7/2 while DE LAHDEDAH has become the new outright favourite with his odds hammered into 2/1 from 6/1. The Other Kobe is also a substantial mover into 8/1 from 20/1. The betting market can be found here.

The semi-finals look insane and our trader Damien Lonergan has confirmed strong support for Trinity Junior to win the opening heat with his odds cut into 11/10 from 11/8. He races from trap four. De Lahdedah is the 6/4 favourite to come out on top in the second semi-final with Coolavanny Hoffa rated as the main danger at 2/1. VALUE!

Sarah’s prediction

I’ve not had much luck this year as all of my ante post selections have been knocked out. I fancy Well Met to win his heat and I think Coolavanny Hoffa will win his.

48 into 24 & a wonderful night for the ladies

16th August 2023

The third round of the 2023 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby didn’t disappoint! The ladies were out in force at Shelbourne Park last Saturday and in more ways than one! There was a brilliant trio of winners with Bobsleigh Dream, Bockos Crystal and Droopys Nice One all booking their spots into the quarterfinals. But that wasn’t the only trio of females as I brought my two best friends Jessica and Grace to the dogs, and they loved every minute of it. It was their first time at HQ and they will definitely be back. In fact, they just booked their flights and are flying over to come to the derby final on September 2nd so I can’t wait.

Bring your bestie to the dogs!

It was brilliant to see them enjoy their night at the dogs, and it just goes to show how enjoyable it is for newcomers. We dined in the restaurant, and I gave them a tour of the stadium. They only have an interest in greyhound racing because of me so I’m glad my passion has rubbed off on them. They have zero knowledge of the industry and have never been greyhound racing before. I was showing them how to study the form and how these amazing canine athletes make it from a baby puppy to an experienced tracker and then to the comfort of your couch. If you get the chance to take your friends to the dogs then do it. The more people we introduce to our industry the better. It’s something we can be very proud of.

Heat winners

Bobsleigh Dream – 29.29. Versatile, consistent, powerhouse, determined, reliable. 12/1 to win the derby.

De Lahdedah – 29.15. Fastest time of the derby so far. A puppy so has youth on his side. 6/1 to win the derby.

Mr Chelm – 29.21. A huge performance from the formerly known Kildare. Gutsy and pacey. 14/1 to win the derby.

Bockos Crystal – 29.45. Getting stronger each week after being in season. Consistent type with plenty of gears and very good in beating the ante post fav Coolavanny Hoffa. 14/1 to win the derby.

Droopys Bro – 29.42. Still a puppy. Will be two years old next month. A career best and one to watch. 16/1 to win the derby.

Scaglietti – 29.27. Ultra consistent. 29.26 in the opening two rounds. Very likable type with a fine dash of early pace. 8/1 to win the derby.

Well Met – 29.62. Running out of his skin. Brilliant early pace last week. Dark dog. 25/1 to win the derby.

Droopys Nice One – 29.64. Finalist last year. Always running with the best. Great servant. Hopefully makes the final again. 25/1 to win the derby.

Michael Fortune Memorial Derby Plate

The prize for the winner has been increased from €5,000 to €7,500!! That’s terrific news so fair play to GRI and sponsors BoyleSports. It’s a brilliant competition for all of those greyhounds in the derby that were knocked out of the opening two rounds.

Thomas O’Keefe has the 7/2 ante post favourite Daleroad Duke who looks an exciting type for the future. He won his heat last week in a time of 29.42 so keep an eye on him, he looks the real deal.

The outright betting is below and all the markets can be found here!

Enjoy the quarterfinals this weekend and don’t forget if you can’t make it then watch it LIVE on Virgin Media 3 and RPGTV (Sporty TV – sky channel 427).

See you Saturday.

From Ballybrit to Ringsend

What a week that was! From Galway Races in Ballybrit to Shelbourne Park in Ringsend, it was one of the busiest weeks I’ve ever had. Horse racing and greyhound racing are both such a massive part of our culture and it was wonderful to see so many racegoers attend the Galway Races Summer Festival with their attendance figures up year on year. Covid had such a damaging effect in so many ways so to see more people attending racing is encouraging to say the least. The same can be said for Shelbourne Park, despite the bank holiday weekend. It’s more than just racing that people come to the dogs for. The atmosphere at HQ is electric on any given Saturday night but derby nights are just special. I’m confident we will see more people visit the Dublin track over the next few weeks, especially derby final night itself. What’s not to love though, right? Great food, great racing, great facilities, Tote, bookmakers, the list goes on.

Anyone reading this knows what a night at the dogs means for them. For some it’s a long journey from County Kerry with one dog that runs in the last race! For others it’s loading the van with all your kennel stars to take part in the second round of the derby. We parade our dogs; we drink our tea over at the kennels and we chat about potential stars we have at home but across the track we have our ordinary racegoers who might be attending Shelbourne Park for the very first time. These people don’t know anything about the long hours we put in, the heartbreak we endure and of course the joy we feel when we win. It’s all important though. Every bit of it. There are many different aspects that make greyhound racing what it is. I enjoy both parts of it and I’m lucky I get to experience it too. We race in Dundalk mainly these days, but I love a night at the dogs with my one runner just as much as I enjoy heading into HQ working for BoyleSports and bringing all the action to followers across social media. I’m a lucky girl and I appreciate everything that this sport has given me. I was working on Galway Bay FM all week and I got in loads of mentions about the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby so hopefully people listening might pop into their local greyhound track to get a glimpse of our wonderful sport.

HOFFA IS A MACHINE

Coolavanny Hoffa

Less of the heavy heartfelt stuff though as we have plenty to talk about with 16 wonderful heat winners last weekend, including the almighty outright favourite Coolavanny Hoffa. His odds have been trimmed into 11/4 from 5/1 and I’m not one bit surprised. What a powerhouse. He is 78lbs of pure beauty. 29.31  he clocked from trap six and to be fair he looks to have another relatively easy heat again on Saturday night with just 1/4 available in the heat betting, which can be found here.

Heat winners

  • Newinn Port - 29.53
  • Clona Duke – 29.55
  • Bobsleigh Dream – 29.36
  • Clonroosk Sydney – 29.61
  • Scaglietti – 29.26
  • Glengar Martha – 29.48
  • Storys Cashout – 29.68
  • Jetara – 29.69
  • Sober Glory – 29.42
  • Undulation – 29.53
  • Clonbrien Treaty – 29.57
  • Undisputed – 29.48
  • Ballymac Marino – 29.52
  • Coolavanny Hoffa – 29.31
  • Bens Teddy – 29.31
  • Halo – 29.72

What a fantastic list of winners with Bens Teddy standing out considering he clocked the same time as Coolavanny Hoffa and won by six lengths. We must send best wishes to Sarah Buckley however as she broke her foot on Saturday night while parading one of her dogs so Sarah if you are reading this, speedy recovery xoxo

Bens Teddy

Bens Teddy

Other stand out performances for me include Glengar Martha who overcame massive odds of 28/1 to win her heat while Undisputed was sublime when beating Another Holiday by five lengths at generous odds of 8/1. It was another fantastic weekend but I’m still uncertain about my outright pick so I’m going to put up Bobsleigh Dream each-way at 16/1. Aside from Hoffa, it really is a wide-open affair for me.

I’m looking forward to the third round as I love when it’s down to just one night. It’s live on RPGTV too so you won’t miss a single second of derby action. It’s going to be magic.

Stay safe and chat to you all on Saturday.

The 2023 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby gets off to a flying start!

Tuesday 1st August

That was the quickest weekend of all time! We flew through 26 heats with 156 now becoming 96. Have you seen the derby winner yet? I’ve seen about ten haha. What an opening round it was. There are always shocks, surprises and disappointments in the Derby.

Up The Dubs!

What a match. I watched it at home as I left it too late to get a ticket (I know, poor me!!). I was watching the interviews and the speech that our captain James McCarthy gave, and I couldn’t help but feel that what Croke Park means to hardcore GAA fans is what Shelbourne Park and the derby means to us greyhounds fans. It must be the most magical feeling walking by Hill 16 holding the Sam Maguire with your teammates, but I bet none of them have experienced winning a BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby. The buzz, the adrenaline, and the pure feeling of achievement that your dream has finally come true. For those of us who are yet to win that big title KEEP DREAMING and never give up. It’s going to happen someday whether its’ an All-Ireland, a Gold Cup at Cheltenham, a green jacket at Augusta or Shelbourne Park, it will happen. To be honest I’d settle for an A3 contest win at this stage haha. That’s the beauty of greyhound racing, it’s full of dreams and hopes. That’s why I love to see so many kids at the derby and there was a huge increase of them getting into the presentation photos last weekend, so the future is looking bright.

Where do I begin?

There were just so many brilliant performances in the opening round that I think I’d feel quite rude by picking the best one so I will give my Top 5 and in no particular order!! Feels like I’m about to announce the final result of Dancing with the Stars.

Patrick Guilfoyle’s Good Maestro. Good by name and good by nature. It was awesome. I marked him down as a major player after watching him win in 29.24 with his outright odds tumbling into 16/1 from 50/1!! He came in under the radar, but he caught the eye so watch this space.

Michael J O’Donovan. Not his dogs but Michael himself!! What a trainer or as Damien Lonegan likes to refer to him as ‘God’. You might not be wrong Damo. Michael is a terrific man with a greyhound. Look at how his dogs performed in the opening round. Coolavanny Hoffa, Another Holiday and Ryhope Beach. Three fantastic winners with Another Holiday boasting the fastest clock to the third bend in a FAST 17.01. Wow.

  • Hoffa is now 6/1 from 8/1 favourite
  • Ryhope Beach is 14/1 from 25/1
  • Another Holiday is 16/1 from 66/1

Raha Mofo. What a lady. When Susie Sapphire was at her best she was a joy to watch and although they have different running styles, Mofo has to be rated almost as highly as the great Susie. Reigning Bitch of the Year, last year’s Sporting Press Irish Oaks winner and most recently the Time Greyhound Nutrition Dundalk International winner! She finished strong to win her heat in 29.66 and is 20/1 to win the derby! One of my ante post picks made his exit in that heat, Gaytime Hugo, so it’s back to the drawing board!

Ballinabola Ed – I just love him and I love the bond he has with Emma Buckley. Ed ran great and I’m delighted for him after his defeat in the Dundalk International. It was great to see him bounce back, and he seems a stronger dog this year. 29.34 and now 12/1 joint second favourite alongside heat winner Clona Duke!

Bulletfromagun – what a performance. A week previous he was beaten by Callaway Masters but he reversed that form in fine style to win by three lengths in 29.77. I love this dog and the crack his owners have along the way, so I hope to see you back in the winner’s enclosure.

There are my Top 5 picks but don’t feel left out if I’ve not mentioned you because every single winner and qualifier were brilliant. Quick mention for Liam Dowling too. Three presentation I made to Shane Dowling on Saturday with Ballymac Johnjo, Ballymac Finn and De Lahdedah all winning. Well done team Kerry.

We have five more weeks of action to look forward too, but it will be over before you know it so enjoy every minute.

Don’t miss me too much!

I won’t be there on Friday as I’m on Galway Bay FM radio all week live from the Galway Races but I will watching HQ from Ballybrit and I wish all of you the best of luck in the second round. Don’t’ be afraid to send me any photos or tag me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

See you Saturday.

Love Sarah x

John Boyle’s BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby contenders

27th July 2023

John Boyle knows what success feels like. The Armagh man has been involved in the betting industry for decades. He got his first break in the sector when he purchased a small betting shop in Markethill, County Armagh, in 1982. His father loaned him £6,000 to help buy the premises and he has since built on that to launch more than 375 shops across Ireland and the UK. The company has gone from strength to strength with over 2,500 employees and an impressive brand that sponsors the likes of the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse and the World Grand Prix of Darts.

As much success that John has enjoyed and is still enjoying, one important title is missing from his CV and that is to own the winner of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby. He came close in 2019 with BoyleSports King…agonisingly close. This big 83lbs black greyhound was trained by Dolores Ruth, a talented and high-profile trainer based in County Kildare. BoyleSports King reached the final of the 2022 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby and managed that feat without winning a heat in the previous five rounds! He was known for his powerful pace and stamina - in most of his races he had to dig deep and come from behind. He was 9/1 heading to traps for the big final and it was an exciting race to say the least.

Epic race

Run Happy set the pace from trap two for trainer Pat Buckley, but the 4/5 favourite Lenson Bocko was hot on his heels for trainer Graham Holland while BoyleSports King was in last place down the back straight. Lenson Bocko was closing the gap bit-by-bit and between the third and fourth bends, it looked like Run Happy was going to need a lot of luck to stay in front. But out of nowhere, the King turned on the turbo power and made up so much ground that the run to the finishing line was one of the best we have ever witnessed. Run Happy was still in front, Lenson Bocko was on his outside and running up to the line on the inside was BOYLESPORTS KING, who was coming with an almighty run and the three of them passed the post together.

Who won?

Well it wasn’t the fairytale ending that John was looking for as Lenson Bocko was crowned the winner and awarded the €140,000 winners prize with just a neck separating the pair, with Run Happy another head back in third place. If this doesn’t excite you then greyhound racing is not for you. The commentary from Ian Fortune was exquisite. You can watch the race here.

Four years later through a pandemic and with three new winners of the derby, a new name is waiting to be etched into the history books with John sending three of his bright hopefuls to traps this weekend for the opening round of the 2023 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.

John’s derby trio

First up is Boylesports Gift who races from trap three in heat four on Friday. Born January 1st 2021 and a son of Ballyhimikin Jet – Hugh Dream. A winner of six races in Ireland with his career starting at Kilkenny last September.  He won his first race on the third attempt in Shelbourne Park with 29.27 clocked, but it wasn’t long until he improved further with more success at HQ over the 525 yards in 28.41. He has raced in Limerick and had a stink in the UK at Towcester during the English Greyhound Derby. Since his return from across the pond he has raced twice at Shelbourne Park finishing behind the talented Trinity Junior in the BoyleSports Champion Stakes final and is looking to get back to winning ways on Friday night. He has a very tough heat however with 2022 Consolation Derby winner Cryptopunk in trap one, speedy Romeo Hanzo in trap two, one of the fastest females in the country Up The Style in trap five and exciting young prospect Newinn Port in trap six. It’s a tough race.

Boylesports Vic

His litter brother Boylesports Vic races from trap one in heat 24 on Saturday night. A winner of four races in Ireland with one of those victories a week ago when landing the spoils over the 550 yards in 29.94. He can be fast away from traps with a decent 28.27 on his card for the 525 yards. He has just 14 races so improvement could be expected, but he has been handed a tough opening heat just like is brother. The 2022 English Greyhound Derby champion Romeo Magico races from trap three while RPGTV 600 and Race of Champions winner Ballinabola Ed races from trap four. He will need to be at his sharpest to qualify, but he should book his spot in the second round.

Boylesports Bob

John’s third derby contender is Boyleports Bob. An exciting son of Good News – Roanne Bess who was born on the 14th October 2021, so he is still a puppy with lots of potential. He has just five races on his card with one win, but that win was pretty impressive. He clocked 28.04 for the 525 yards last month at HQ winning comfortably by four lengths. His recent race was nice form too as he finished three lengths behind De Lahdedah over the 550 yards and the winning time was 29.24, leaving Bob doing an impressive time of 29.45 on his first trip over the distance. There is more to come but just like his kennelmates, it’s another tough one with Bockos Crystal and Bobsleigh Dream hugely talented ladies. Bob is seeded wide so trap six will suit and fingers crossed he qualifies.

Happy anniversary

156 names went into the drum during the draw on Monday.

109 inside seeds

15 middle seeds

Three will qualify from each of the 26 heats PLUS 18 of the fastest 4th placings. All John needs is a bit of luck and everyone at BoyleSports would like to wish all owners, trainers and connections the very best of luck in this year’s renewal. And of course, it’s a special renewal as it’s our 10th year sponsoring this AMAZING event.

The outright betting can be found here and the heat betting can be found here.

Enjoy the next six weeks, I know I will! 😊
