It’s with great sadness we must report the passing of a great greyhound racing enthusiast and character, Declan Lenagh.
His friend Danny Druse wrote a little something that captured Declan and his passion for the sport. It can be read below.
We echo Danny’s words and pass on our sincerest sympathies to his wife Ann, his sons Matthew and David, his brother Damian and mother Mary.
May He Rest In Peace.
The greyhound community in Armagh has lost a great friend and a true lover of the sport with the sad passing of Declan Lenagh of Armagh City.
A veritable mine of information on the greyhound game, he spent hours each day on his computer checking out results, upcoming fixtures and dogs for sale. He invariably had the knack of buying a fairly decent one. His last greyhound before retiring due to his illness was Madabout Bella, a multiple winner in Lifford, Dundalk and Shelbourne that was trained by his great friend Sean Devlin and whose last ever run was a smashing 41.84(DDO) in a Shelbourne 750.
Back in the late 80s he took great pride in assisting his late father to train Bright Pin to the semi-final of the Derby.
Taken ill around 12 months ago, Declan bore his misfortune with the calmness and fortitude that symptomised his overall attitude to life. A great family man - during recent visits to Dundalk he spoke to me with great pride about how well his children had done and how caring and loving his wife had steadfastly looked after him since taking ill.
The sympathies of the entire clan of greyhound people in Armagh are undoubtedly with his family, his wife Ann, his sons Matthew and David, his brother Damian and his mother Mary in the wake of the passing of this warm, wonderful gentleman.
May He Rest In Peace.
