SENSATIONAL SYD TAKES HEADLINES IN RCETS

Ian Fortune

It was predictable that a number of those that contested the opening round of the RCETS Open Unraced at Shelbourne Park would improve in the space of a week but few could have expected what was to come with Here Comes Syd producing the most remarkable run to get tongues wagging.

An eye-catcher in the opening round for Murt Leahy and the Lady and the Syd Syndicate, the powerful son of Droopys Sydney and Lemon Ariana couldn’t have been any more impressive as he displayed awesome pace and determination to see off some very talented rivals.

Crossfield Linda flashed from four to dictate early but she was soon pursued by Garryvoe Joe, while Ballymac Bronze and Here Comes Syd gave chase in third. The race was now on in earnest. Garryvoe Joe edged closer to the leader to take up the running on the third turn but Here Comes Syd was the one really catching the eye at this point.

He may have entered the back straight in fourth but he moved through the gears to sit right on the heals of the leaders at the third turn. It was an incredible display of pace from the August ’20 whelp and he came around the outside to challenge and head Garryvoe Joe as they turned for home.

Staying on strongly, Here Comes Syd emerged a brilliant winner by a length in 28.13. Garryvoe Joe was second with Ballymac Bronze staying on for third, just two lengths further adrift. The first four home are all very talented by the run from Here Comes Syd was pretty special. ON this evidence, he is destined for great things in his chosen profession.

TRINITY REMAINS UNBEATEN

Trinity Junior also recorded a very impressive success in the second heat although he was forced to pull out all the stops to contain the late charge of Bens Teddy.

The Peter Cronin trained youngster flew into the turn to assert in the early yards.

Once doing so, Tim Slevin’s son of Laughil Blake and Oi Oi Upenalty seemed certain to come out on top but Bens Teddy had other ideas. Moving second on the second turn, Bens Teddy made up plenty of ground into the third turn before staying on strongly on the run in.

The line came in time for Trinity Junior, however. As if sensing the pressure from his pursuer, Trinity Junior stuck his neck out to hold his rival by a short head in 28.32. Clona Rebel, despite being forced to check at the second turn, ran a big race to finish just a length and a half adrift in third.
