JACK MOONEY

JACK MOONEY

It’s with sadness we must report the passing one of the great characters of greyhound racing, Jack Mooney.

Many will know Jack through his long association with Ladbrokes but he was also a passionate supporter of greyhound racing and also owned numerous dogs through the years.

Of the many he owned, Dublin Lass and Dublin Girl, who were trained by Des and Marie Gilbert, were the best of them and gave Jack great joy.

It was during his time at Ladbrokes that he was directly responsible for the form guides that now adorn the top of most race cards, commissioning his great friend Michael Fortune to do the first full page form guide for one of the many functions he organized at Shelbourne Park.

After seeing the guide, the then chairman of Bord Na gCon, Paschal Taggart, pressed on with idea at Shelbourne Park and the rest is history.

Jack was also a contributor to the RTE coverage of greyhound racing on more than one occasion while, along with another of his great friends Pat Flanagan, was one of the driving forces behind the Anglo-Irish international in the late 90’s and early 00’s.

But more than all that, Jack will be remembered for his personality and charisma. Only a few months ago, Jack attended the Boylesports Irish Derby and was his usual jovial self. They really don’t make them like Jack anymore. When he was in the room, you just gravitated towards him. A wonderful character but also a true gentleman, he will be missed greatly by those that knew him.

We would like to send on our sincerest condolences to his wife Joan, sons John, Alan and Fearghal, daughter Ciara, his sons and daughter in law, Fergal, Sinead, Jane, Vanessa, his beloved grandchildren, extended family and many, many friends.

May He Rest In Peace.
