Here Comes Syd may have had only a handful of races in a short racing career but for the briefest of moment’s he shone like a comet traversing the sky.
He would have just eight starts in an interrupted career before a persistent injury ended his time on the track.
In the subsequent months, he served a few bitches after the decision was made to send him to stud. And the first of his pups hit the track on Thursday last and made quite an impression. Left Corner Back was in action in the opening round of the Good Cody @ Stud Open Unraced at Enniscorthy and ran out a mighty impressive scorer.
Showing superb early speed, the June ’23 youngster shot clear of his rivals to emerge a most impressive and wide margin scorer in 28.88. His time was easily the fastest of the five heat winners and he is clearly a greyhound with a bright future.
It was a reminder of just how talented his sire was. Here Comes Syd debuted in the summer of 2022 in the valuable RCETS Open Unraced and the well-bred son of Droopys Sydney and Lemon Arianna immediately made a big impression.
Finding traffic on debut, he flew home behind subsequent track stars, future Champion Stakes winner and Derby finalist Trinity Junior and Derby third Bens Teddy.
A week later in the semi-finals, he absolutely flew. Coming from off the pace, he would set the standard with a massive 28.13 run. Sadly, he would miss the final due to injury. He returned three months later, winning in 28.35 but it would be his final win. Murt Leahy, who trained him through his racing career had no doubt how good he was and could have been but it wasn’t meant to be.
Persistent injury meant he never had to chance to reach his full potential on the track but perhaps he could do so as a sire. Certainly, there will be plenty of interest in Left Corner Back when he returns to action at Enniscorthy on Thursday night.
