Born Racer A Natural Talent
The Aidan McVeigh trained Pavilion Fire was the fastest heat winner in the second round of the Droopys Stud Fair Warrior at Mullingar Greyhound Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The defending champion hasn’t been at his best since winning the title last year, but he bounced back to top form over the 400 yards trip winning comfortably in a time of 20.88 (track marked .20 spots slow).
Owned by Richard Irwin, Pavilion Fire has certainly stamped his authority in this competition and has proven to his rivals that he is ready to try and defend his crown.
Leahs Best won the opening heat for John Atkinson after showing tremendous pace. A first runner in the Fair Warrior for John who told us after his win he was delighted with his performance after meeting a hot-pot last week. This son of Ballymac Best – Tegans Turn clocked 21.14 with Casemiro three and a half lengths back in second place for trainer Enda Gethings.
It was a straight-forward win for Road Exile who produced a fast 21.04 for trainer Pat Buckley as the 4/7 favourite. Emma Buckley spoke to us after his win and explained that he is a pleasure to train. Jetara was second for Ian Reilly and Killeshil Ranger third for Vinent Lynch.
The perfect duo of John Mitchell and Jennifer O’Donnell teamed up to win the third heat with Born Racer who clocked 20.93, a stunning performance from trap one. This son of Ballymac Anton – Whitings Gift won by five lengths with Manalishi Jet second for James Kerr and the consistent Zippy Canning was third for Paula Hoban.
The star of the opening round was Glendale Zozo as he smashed the track record, but he was an absentee from the second-round. The semi-finals take place this Sunday.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for Greyhound Racing Ireland, said: “We all love to see greyhounds who come back to try and defend their title. Pavilion Fire returned to winning ways on Sunday at a track he loves so it looks like he is sending out a message to his rivals to watch out! Born Racer, Road Exile and Leahs Best were the other heat winners, so things are really starting to heat up now ahead of the semi-finals.”
