Paul Hennessy confirmed that one of the great greyhounds of this century, Jaytee Jet passed away at home at nearly thirteen years of age last week.
Known at home as ‘Ted’, Paul confirmed that the stunningly fast son of Droopys Scolari and Chin Gack Gook had been a member of the family and had the run of the house and yard.
Said Hennessy of his great friend, “He was just the most gorgeous dog, he had a wonderful temperament and all the grandkids loved him. He had a great life with us and really was king of the castle.”
During his racing career, Jaytee Jet was something special. As a raw youngster in 2015, he would reach the quarter finals of the English Derby and the semi-finals of the Irish Derby, while also winning the consolation final of the latter.
The following year was his career year, however. A brilliant winner of the Easter Cup in March, he would be targeted at the last ever English Derby held at Plough Lane, Wimbledon. Majestic through the competition, he would lead home an Irish one-two in the final.
Despite his age, he would again reach an English Derby quarter final at Towcester in 2017 before ending his career in the final of the Irish Derby just days after his fourth birthday. A special dog with a huge engine and great constitution, he will be fondly remembered by so many as one of the true greats of modern times. Thanks for the memories and Rest In Peace, Ted.
