DENIS HURLEY

It’s with real sadness we must report the passing of Denis Hurley.

One of the real gentlemen of greyhound sport, Denis was a great age and remained a permanent fixture at the track for much of his life.

Along with his late wife Maureen, Denis was responsible for the famed “Rushwee” prefix and put many fine greyhounds through his hands in his many decades as a trainer. The highlight of his time in the sport was sending out Rushwee Heights to finish third in the Derby back in 1982.

The son of Blackers Height actually won his semi-final and gave his owners a real thrill, finishing just over two lengths behind Cooladine Super in the decider.

Denis was a regular at both Harold’s Cross and Shelbourne Park and always had a kind word. He had a great ability to converse and was the best of company. Those that have spent any amount at time at either track would have found themselves in conversation with Denis.

He really did love the company of others and his absence will certainly be noted by the many that were lucky enough to call him a friend.

We would like to take this opportunity to send on our condolences to his remaining family, his daughter Joanna, sons Oliver, Maurice, Donnacadh and Kevin, his sister Joan, his grandchildren Richard, Oliver, Marian, Tomás Luke, James, Ruth, Alex, Chris, Maeve, Craig, Grace, Declan, Susan, Deirdre and Kate and 10 great-grandchildren, his extended family and many friends.

May He Rest In Peace
