The coming days will see one of the great gentlemen of Irish greyhound racing stepping away professionally with the news that PJ Roberts is set to retire and walk off into the sunset after many years of being part of the furniture at Enniscorthy Greyhound stadium.
PJ is set to retire after Monday’s meeting at the Showgrounds and we’re absolutely certain he will get a great send off. Some believe it is also thirty years since PJ first took up his role as Control Steward at Enniscorthy although few have that good a memory.
As well as his stewarding role, he has acted as a mentor, a friend and sometimes therapist to those at the Wexford venue. Never afraid to offer support and advice, he will be greatly missed by all at the track.
Certainly, you would never hear a bad word said about PJ and it’s for this reason we would suggest he won’t be a stranger. The door is always open to him and those that have worked with the great man over the years wish him all the health and happiness as he starts to work off his own schedule for once.
Indeed, Monday will be the end of an era at Enniscorthy but PJ will be the first to admit the show must go on and the hard work and dedication he has put into the special venue over the years will work in favour of those attempting to fill his boots. On behalf of everyone involved in the sport, we wish PJ the very best of luck in his retirement and, again, don’t be a stranger.
