BRESBET TO RENEW EASTER CUP SPONSORSHIP

BresBet is committed to another two-year sponsorship of The Easter Cup, one of Ireland’s top class greyhound competitions, held at Shelbourne Park.

The Sheffield-based online bookmaker, which specialises in football, horse and greyhound racing, initially backed the four-round 550-yard showpiece in 2022.

This year’s edition began with heats on Saturday, March 18, and concludes with the final on Saturday April 8, with prize money of €25,000 going to the winner.

Commenting on the two-year extension, BresBet Head of Trading Carl Perry said: “We are delighted to continue working with Shelbourne Park and Greyhound Racing Ireland on such a famous and longstanding competition as The Easter Cup. It’s such an incredible sporting competition.

“This shows our continued commitment to support top-class greyhound racing both in Ireland and the UK, with the Easter Cup bearing the BresBet name alongside the BresBet Gymcrack at Kinsley and the BresBet Steel City Cup at Owlerton Stadium, Sheffield.”

“The team at Greyhound Racing Ireland and Shelbourne Park management have helped make the BresBet Easter Cup a roaring success and we look forward to continuing to work with them.”

“We love greyhound racing here at BresBet and will endeavour to support the sport whenever we can.”

John Tuohey, Interim CEO of Greyhound Racing Ireland, said: “We are delighted that BresBet has decided to continue their title sponsorship of The Easter Cup.

“As the first ever Open event in our sport in Ireland, The Easter Cup has a history as long as track racing itself and has always attracted the very top names to the competition.

“By sponsoring another two years of The Easter Cup, BresBet have confirmed their commitment to greyhound racing. All of the team at Greyhound Racing Ireland and Shelbourne Park look forward to continuing our relationship with them as we work together to promote this great competition and our sport as a whole.”

First run at Shelbourne Park in 1928, previous winners of The Easter Cup include the legendary Spanish Battleship, the three-time Irish Derby winner, who won in 1954 and 1955. While Mick the Miller, himself a three-time English Derby winner, was runner-up in 1929.

Other Easter Cup winners include Indian Joe (1980), who won the English Derby at White City the same year, and another English Derby champion Farloe Melody, who successfully defended his Easter Cup title (1991/92) having won his Derby at Wimbledon in 1992.

Last year’s winner of the BresBet Easter Cup Susie Sapphire, trained by Owen McKenna, has since retired to breeding. Connections will no doubt be looking forward to the next generation of top-class racers.
