The Cork greyhound community lost another great member with the sad passing of Sean Lucey.
Sean was a great supporter of greyhound racing and he had a huge passion for both track and coursing. He enjoyed plenty of success as well over the years and he built up a great association with James Kelleher. Around this time last year, James and Sean had a fantastic night at the Cork track when Rushing Bolger won in a fantastic 28.31. Sold soon after and renamed Clona Rocko, he clocked an outstanding 29.61 for the Derby distance at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night, winning his heat of the Michael Fortune Memorial Derby Plate.
Sean was the main man behind the huge benefit nights for Mayfield GAA at Curraheen Park over the years. Sean was a regular at the Cork tracks and he will be missed terribly by all his great friends.
Mayfield GAA have a lovely piece on their Facebook page: "Our most famous player to ever wear our great jersey.
Your star shined so bright with the blood and bandage of Cork & Seandun but it was here in Mayfield you made that name so famous.
Looking for the definition of Mayfield GAA, you looked no further than Sean.
An inter county star who cared for no other team but his club. A member of the 3 in a row Cork team, a shining star of our 78' county winning team.
A giant on the field, the nicest man in the county off it.
You have been an inspiration to everyone who has put on the red and white of Baile Na mBocht and will continue to be forever.
We will tell stories forever of how you played Junior B in goal at 69 years old in order for us to field a team not so long ago, to you keeping the great Eddie Keher scoreless just to name a two tales.
A true ambassador for our club, your void will be truly massive and you will certainly be missed by everybody involved.
Sean would never see anybody stuck in their personal or professional lives and made sure we never wanted for anything. He was and always will be a role model for everybody at our club and a standard we'll thrive to get to as a player and most importantly a human being."
To his family and friends, we extend our deepest sympathy,
May his soul rest in Peace.
