MARTIN FAHY

MARTIN FAHY

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of one Galway Greyhound Stadiums great patrons and personalities, Martin Fahy.

Hailing from Menlo on the outskirts of Galway City, Martin was an ever-present at the track for many years and renewed as a superb handler of a Greyhound.

During his many years as an owner and as a licensed trainer, Martin excelled in both track and field and enjoyed much success at several tracks, competing and winning many prestigious competitions throughout the country.

One of his finest runners was the brilliant Mall Brandy, which was owned by Michael Casey, and whose 350-yard track record of 18.62 still stands at Galway to this day. Another favourite was Menlo Polly, who was owned by his wife Carol, and went on to win fourteen races throughout her career.

Martin also was a superb mentor to many of the younger people that became involved in training over the last twenty years at Galway and indeed many will say that Martin was a key reason for their interest in the sport.

Martin gave many years’ service to the W.G.O.B.A and served as Chairman and President, while maintaining his huge interest in the dogs and patrons, which was always his number one priority.

Outside of Greyhound Racing Martin was a renowned oarsman, coach and administrator with Galway Rowing Club, holding virtually every office in the Club and coaching many successful crews throughout the years.

To his wife Carol, Sister Della , Sister-in-law Josephine, Nieces, Nephews, close and numerous friends we send our deepest sympathies .

Martin will repose at the Church of The Holy Family Mervue (H91 FH52) on Friday October 20th from 5-7pm, With Mass on Saturday October 21st in the Abbey Church Francis Street at 11.30 a.m
